Staying Alive Trading Cards

Illustrating a series of trading cards showcasing unique animals and their defense mechanisms for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science’s special exhibition run of Staying Alive to be displayed across diverse forms of promotional media.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences hosted a special exhibition during the spring and summer of 2026 titled Staying Alive, that features a diverse group of live animals that each have unique self-defense strategies. While developing the promotional materials for this special exhibition, the idea was to highlight a small selection of the animals featured, especially within different categories of defense (such as chemical defense, armor, stingers, ect.) in a fun and interesting way. The trading cards were meant to be an engaging campaign that visually deviated from the photography heavily used in the main marketing campaign for colorful and engaging illustrative style.

The animals chosen for these cards are each unique species with unique defenses. Each animal also had specific considerations for each background based on the habitat they are commonly found in (Three-Banded Armadillos being commonly found in grasslands, Two-toed sloths being found in trees, ect).

These cards were used across multiple collateral uses, including as animated motion graphics of a select few of the animals in-action on social media applications.
